Islamabad (The Uttam Hindu): Pakistan has recently promoted its Army Chief, General Asim Munir, to the highest military rank of Field Marshal. With this promotion, Asim Munir has become the second military officer in Pakistan's history to attain the rank of Field Marshal. Following the promotion, the Pakistani army has once again issued a threatening statement to India. The army stated that India is playing with fire, and if needed, war with India is possible. Pakistan’s DGISPR (Director General Inter-Services Public Relations) even said that if necessary, war is possible and they are always prepared for it.

The cabinet of the Shehbaz Sharif government made the major decision to appoint General Asim Munir as Field Marshal and officially announced it. After this, an atmosphere of fear and surprise has emerged in Pakistan. Imran Khan’s party, PTI, has strongly opposed the move. Party supporters claim that with Munir becoming Field Marshal, Imran Khan may never be released from jail. It is also being said in Pakistan that Munir made this move to secure his position, as Field Marshals never retire.

An additional star has been added to Asim Munir’s shoulder insignia, and he will now wear five stars on his uniform. However, opposition to this decision has already begun in Pakistan. Waqar Malik said, “The dictator has appointed himself as Field Marshal. Another dictator has done this before.” Referring to Field Marshal Ayub Khan, he said that the whole nation still remembers it.

There are also discussions that the Field Marshal title is mostly symbolic, and the fifth star is given mainly as an honorary distinction. It has no operational value and, in reality, it is essentially the same as the position of Army Chief.
