Apple Reaffirms Commitment to India, Rejects Pressure to Shift Plans
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): iPhone maker Apple has assured the Indian government that there will be no change in its investment plans in the country. This assurance comes after recent criticism by former US President Donald Trump, in which he expressed displeasure over Apple's increasing manufacturing activities in India.
According to a media report, government sources said that Apple is fully committed to its plans to invest in India. The company has made it clear to the government that it will continue its expansion plans considering India as a major manufacturing hub.
Apple will continue to invest in India, there will be no change in plans; gave a shock to Donald Trump: Donald Trump said during a business event in Doha, Qatar that he had spoken to Apple CEO Tim Cook about the company's expanding operations in India. Trump said, "I had a little problem with Tim Cook. I told him I am being nice to you but I have come to know that you are doing manufacturing all over India. I said India can take care of itself, you should increase manufacturing in America."
Regarding Trump's statements, Electronic Industries Association of India (ELCINA) general secretary Raju Goyal said, "This may cause some slowdown, but it will not have any major impact. This is just a statement. I think Trump may change his stance."
India is fast becoming an important manufacturing base for Apple. In the financial year 2024-25, the company has produced iPhones worth about $22 billion in India, which is 60% more than the previous year. Currently, one in every five iPhones sold worldwide is manufactured in India.
Despite Trump's comments, Apple's growth strategy in India has not been affected. The company's stance is a positive sign for India, further strengthening the country's position as a hub for global electronics manufacturing
