Update: 2025-05-05 13:31 GMT

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): In light of the recent Pahalgam attack and escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, the Union Home Ministry has issued a directive to all states to conduct mock drills on May 7 to ensure effective civil security.

Mock Drill Objectives

The mock drills will focus on:

1. Operating air raid warning sirens

2. Training civilians, students and others on civil defense aspects to protect themselves in case of hostile attacks

3. Implementing crash blackout measures

4. Premature concealment of important plants and installations

5. Updating and rehearsing evacuation plans

Siren Installation and Training

The Home Ministry has also instructed states to install air raid sirens and provide training to civil defense personnel, students  and citizens on rescue procedures in case of air raids. These sirens will serve as a warning system, alerting people to seek shelter in safe locations.

Preparedness and Vigilance

The government's move aims to ensure preparedness and vigilance among citizens and authorities alike, in the face of potential security threats. The mock drill is expected to help identify areas for improvement and enhance the country's civil defense capabilities.

According to government sources, the timing of these instructions issued by the Union Home Ministry is extremely important, as it has come at a time when tensions between India and Pakistan are at their peak and there is a possibility of war breaking out at any time. Sources said that such a nationwide civil security exercise was last conducted in the year 1971, the year when there was a war on two fronts between India and Pakistan. The instruction for such an exercise after 53 years reflects the seriousness of the current tension and the preparedness of the central government.
