IMD Issues Red Alert for North India, Warns of Heavy Rains and Storms

Update: 2025-05-03 03:00 GMT

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for several regions in North India, including Delhi-NCR, Haryana, and Western Uttar Pradesh, warning of heavy rains, strong winds, and hailstorms on Saturday. The alert comes after a powerful storm accompanied by heavy rains and thunderstorms swept through the region on Friday morning, claiming at least eight lives.

The IMD has predicted light rain on Saturday, with the possibility of thunderclouds, lightning, and strong winds blowing at a speed of 20-40 km per hour. The weather system is expected to bring relief from the scorching heat in Uttar Pradesh, but also poses a risk to crops and infrastructure.

Heavy rains and strong winds caused significant disruptions on Friday, with 200 flights delayed and trees uprooted at 236 locations. The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was also blocked due to landslides caused by the rain. The IMD's warning is a reminder for residents to take necessary precautions and stay informed about the latest weather updates.
