India Slaps Complete Ban on Goods from Bangladesh via Land Route, Shakes Trade Relations
New Delhi(The Uttam Hindu): In a significant move, India has imposed a complete ban on goods coming from Bangladesh via the land route, delivering a major blow to the neighboring country’s economy. The Indian government recently announced that it had restricted imports worth approximately ₹6,600 crore, affecting various sectors in Bangladesh.
The ban has caused disruptions, with ground ports in Bangladesh now facing severe traffic congestion. Trucks laden with goods are stuck at the borders due to the closure of the land route.
On Saturday, India introduced restrictions on key goods such as ready-made garments, processed food, and plastic items, which had previously been imported through the land route. Instead, the Indian government has directed that these items should only be imported via the two designated sea ports: Kolkata and Nhava Sheva.
The decision is expected to significantly impact Bangladesh’s trade, with an estimated $770 million worth of trade affected. This amount constitutes 42 percent of the total bilateral trade between India and Bangladesh. The move marks a major shift in trade relations between the two neighboring countries.
