Lalu Yadav's Plea Rejected: SC Clears Way for Trial in Land for Job Scam Case
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The troubles of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo and former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, who is embroiled in the land for job scam, are not reducing. On Wednesday, the Supreme Court gave him another big blow by clearly refusing to stay the proceedings of the case going on in the lower court.
While disposing of Lalu Yadav's petition, the apex court said that a petition related to this matter is already pending in the Delhi High Court. A bench of Justices MM Sundaresh and N Kotishwar Singh remarked that framing of charges by the lower court will depend on the decision on the petition pending in the Delhi High Court.
This case is from the year 2004 to 2009, when Lalu Prasad Yadav was the Railway Minister at the Centre. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) alleges that during this period, many people were given jobs by flouting the rules for recruitment to Group 'D' posts in the Railways. In return, the applicants were made to transfer their lands in the name of Lalu Yadav's family members and close ones.
On behalf of Lalu Yadav, his lawyer Mudit Gupta had filed an application demanding adjournment of the trial court proceedings till August 12. However, the Supreme Court refused to grant relief. Let us tell you that earlier on July 18, the apex court had rejected a similar petition of Lalu, in which he had challenged the decision of the Delhi High Court.
The CBI is investigating this high-profile case and has already filed a chargesheet against Lalu Yadav, his family members and other accused in Delhi's Rouse Avenue Court. After this stand of the Supreme Court, the way has been cleared for framing of charges against them in the lower court.
