Pakistan's Foiled Attack: 8 Punjab Cities Targeted, Rocket Fragments Found in Amritsar

Update: 2025-05-08 10:45 GMT

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Pakistan's attempt to launch an attack on India's northern and western cities was foiled by the country's air defense system on Wednesday night. The Ministry of Defense reported that the attacks were neutralized in cities including Pathankot, Amritsar, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Adampur, Ludhiana, Bathinda and Chandigarh.

Amritsar Experiences Blasts and Blackout

Residents of Amritsar reported hearing blast sounds and experiencing two blackouts during the night. Later, rocket fragments were found in four villages, which were immediately reported to the army. The army and air force teams are currently collecting and disposing of the rockets.

Punjab Police's Response

Punjab police have canceled leaves for all personnel until further orders, with exceptions only for special circumstances with high-level permission. Meanwhile, the Border Security Force (BSF) shot and killed an infiltrator attempting to cross the international border in Ferozepur.

Restrictions on Firecrackers

District magistrates in Amritsar, Moga, and Kapurthala have banned the use of firecrackers until July 5 to avoid panic due to the recent incidents.

Investigation and Precautions

The police commissioner of Amritsar attributed the sounds to sonic booms, which are loud noises caused by objects breaking the sound barrier, typically fighter jets. Authorities have urged residents to remain calm and take precautions, including staying indoors and turning off outdoor lights during the blackout.

The situation remains under control, with security forces working to ensure public safety and prevent any further incidents.
