New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a strong and emotionally charged statement on Thursday, declared that India will never compromise on the interests of its farmers, cattle rearers, and fishermen, no matter the cost. His remarks come amid rising tensions with the United States, which recently announced a 50% import duty on certain Indian goods.

Speaking at the MS Swaminathan Centenary International Conference, PM Modi said: "For us, the welfare of our farmers is the highest priority. India will never compromise the interests of its farmers, cattle rearers, or fishermen. I know I may have to personally pay a big price for this, but I’m ready. Today, India stands firmly with its annadatas (food providers)."

The statement is seen as a direct response to US President Donald Trump’s executive order, which imposes an additional 25% tariff, raising the total to 50% on Indian imports. This move, reportedly taken in protest against India continuing to import oil from Russia, is part of Washington’s broader strategy to pressure New Delhi economically.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs has condemned the decision, calling it "unjust, unfair, and irrational," asserting that buying oil from Russia is crucial for India's energy security. The government reiterated its commitment to protecting national interests at all costs.
