Punjab Issues Directive to Universities: No Student to Be Forced Off Campus Amid Ongoing Situation
Chandigarh (The Uttam Hindu): In view of the ongoing situation, the Punjab Department of Higher Education has issued a revised directive to all government and private universities and colleges, mandating institutions to prioritize student welfare and safety without exception.
According to the circular, while holidays may be declared, no student shall be forced to leave the campus if they are unable or unwilling to do so due to safety, transport or personal reasons. Institutions are instructed to continue providing accommodation, food, healthcare and other essential services until the last student remains on campus.
The department has also clarified that ongoing or scheduled examinations cannot be cited as a reason to compel students to remain on campus. Those who choose to return home due to current conditions must be provided with alternate examination arrangements without academic penalty. These rescheduling decisions may be guided by respective state universities.
Furthermore, all universities are required to designate nodal officers or helplines to ensure prompt communication and support for students with any concerns.
The government reiterated that students remain under the care and responsibility of their institutions and any lapse will be treated with utmost seriousness. Management of institutions found negligent will be held accountable. The instructions have been dispatched to vice-chancellors, registrars, and relevant officials for immediate compliance.
