India Announces Test Squad for England Tour: Shubman Gill appointed as Captain, this player named Vice-Captain

Update: 2025-05-24 08:31 GMT

Mumbai (The Uttam Hindu): A meeting of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was held on Saturday finalising the 18 member squad for upcoming Test Series against England which is set to commence on June 20. Shubhman Gill has been selected as the captain of India's Test cricket team and Rishabh Pant has been selected as the vice captain. This will be a 5 match Test series against England.

This move follows the retirement of Rohit Sharma from Test cricket, prompting the selection committee to look towards younger talents for leadership roles. Jasprit Bumrah, who has previously led the team in Sharma's absence, was not considered for the captaincy or vice-captaincy due to ongoing fitness concerns.

The squad includes seasoned players like Ravindra Jadeja, alongside emerging talents such as Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan. The inclusion of Karun Nair and Shardul Thakur adds depth to both the batting and bowling departments. With the series against England marking the beginning of India's journey in the World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle, the leadership of Gill and Pant is expected to usher in a new era for Indian Test cricket.
