Two Years On, Manipur Still Burning: Shutdown Paralyzes State Amid Meitei-Kuki Tensions
Imphal (Uttam Hindu News): On the anniversary of the ethnic violence that started two years ago in Manipur, a shutdown is being observed across the state today. On the second anniversary of the violence, organizations associated with the Meitei and Kuki communities called for a shutdown in different areas, due to which normal life was affected.
Manipur violence: State-wide shutdown on two years anniversary, normal life affected; Tension rises again between Meitei-Kuki communities: In Imphal valley, the Co-ordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), an organisation of the Meitei community, has called for a shutdown. On the other hand, the Kuki community's organisations, Zomi Students Federation and Kuki Students Organisation, have called for a shutdown in the hilly areas. During this period, markets, private offices, schools-colleges and public transport services are completely shut. Only a few private vehicles are seen on the roads. In view of the sensitive situation, security has been tightened across the state. In Imphal, COCOMI organised a 'Manipur People's Convention', while a candlelight march will also be taken out in the evening to pay tribute to the victims of violence.
At the same time, 'Day of Separation' was celebrated in the Kuki-dominated areas of Churachandpur and Kangpokpi. Here the Kukis reiterated their demand for a separate administrative region. Tribute programs were organized at the 'Wall of Remembrance' in Churachandpur and at the Sehken Burial Site. More than 260 people have lost their lives and more than 70,000 people have been rendered homeless in the violence that erupted between the Meitei and Kuki communities in May 2023. Even after two years, the tension has not subsided, rather the ethnic divisions are becoming more deep.
