Wholesale Inflation Rate Hits 14-Month Low, Relief for Common Man
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Inflation based on the wholesale price index in India has reached a 14-month low of 0.39 percent in May. Earlier it was 0.85 percent in April. This information was given in the data released by the government on Monday.
This is the third consecutive month when the wholesale inflation rate has seen a decline. Earlier in May 2024, the wholesale inflation rate was 2.74 percent. According to information given by the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry, in May 2025, inflation has come down in most categories including food, fuel and primary commodities.
Last month, the wholesale inflation rate in food items has come down to 1.72 percent, which was 2.55 percent in April. This trend shows that the prices of food items are coming down in the country.
In the food articles category, the inflation rate of vegetables declined to -21.62 percent in May from -18.26 percent in April. The inflation rate of pulses was -10.41 percent in May, while the inflation rate of wheat was 5.75 percent. The inflation rate of eggs, meat and fish declined from -0.29 percent in April to -1.01 percent in May. The inflation rate of potatoes and onions was -29.42 percent and -14.41 percent respectively.
The inflation rate in fuel and energy stood at (-) 2.27 percent in May, which was (-) 2.18 percent in April.
Inflation for primary articles declined to (-) 2.02 percent in May from (-) 1.44 percent in April. WPI core inflation, which excludes food and fuel, declined to 0.9 percent from 1.5 percent in April. According to government data, the inflation rate on manufacturing products stood at 2.04 percent in May, which was 2.62 percent in April.
