Virat Kohli creates history, becomes the second player in the world to achieve this feat
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The three-match ODI series between India and South Africa has concluded. India won the three-match ODI series 2-1 after winning Saturday's match in Visakhapatnam by nine wickets. Yashasvi Jaiswal, who scored a century in the third ODI, was named Player of the Match, while Virat Kohli, who scored two consecutive centuries and a half-century, was named Player of the Series.
Virat surpassed former Sri Lankan captain and legendary player Sanath Jayasuriya in winning the Player of the Series award the most number of times in the ODI format. Virat Kohli scored 135 runs in the first ODI played in Ranchi, 102 runs in the second ODI played in Raipur and an unbeaten 65 runs in the third ODI played in Visakhapatnam. In total, he scored 302 runs in three matches and won the Player of the Series award. This was the 12th time in ODI cricket that Virat won the Player of the Series award.
Virat Kohli broke former Sri Lankan captain Sanath Jayasuriya's record for most Player of the Series awards in ODIs. Jayasuriya won the Player of the Series award 11 times in ODIs. Besides being a brilliant and aggressive opening batsman, Jayasuriya was also a superb bowler. His bowling, along with his batting, often contributed to his Player of the Series honors.
Sachin Tendulkar holds the record for the most Player of the Series awards in the ODI format. He has won the title 15 times. Former South African captain Shaun Pollock, with nine, and West Indies' Chris Gayle, with eight, are fourth and fifth, respectively.
