New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Despite calls from US President Donald Trump, it is far more challenging for Apple to manufacture iPhones in the US than in India. In a detailed report, The New York Times has shed light on why Apple would prefer to produce iPhones in India instead of the US.

According to the report, the city has grown rapidly since the establishment of Foxconn's project in Devanahalli on the outskirts of Bengaluru. Many other companies have also been attracted here due to this site spread over 300 acres. Foxconn alone has invested two and a half billion dollars here. The report emphasizes the fact that India requires 1 crore new jobs every year due to the rapidly increasing population. India already has a shortage of jobs in the manufacturing and service sectors. In such a situation, employees are easily available in India on low salaries and allowances, whereas such is not the case in America. This is the reason why Apple would prefer to manufacture iPhones in India instead of America.

Foxconn is assembling iPhones for Apple in India, which is handling this responsibility globally. Before the Corona period, most of the iPhones were produced in China. However, after the supply chain was disrupted during the Corona epidemic and with the aim of reducing dependence on any one country, Apple turned to India. According to a Counterpoint Research report, by the beginning of this year, 18 percent of the iPhones sold worldwide were made in India.

It is estimated that by the end of this year, about 30 percent of iPhones will be manufactured in India. By then, Foxconn's plant in Devanahalli will be fully operational, a part of which is still under construction. It currently employs 8,000 people, and this figure will reach 40,000 when it is operational at full capacity. The New York Times report also states that it has now become easier to obtain land for a plant in India, and people are also easily available for jobs. Additionally, many Taiwanese, American and South Korean companies have also set up their plants near Foxconn, which supplies them with the necessary parts.
