Confident group chairman CJ Roy dies by suicide amid IT raid, brother blames officials for harassment
Bengaluru (The Uttam Hindu): Friday proved to be a horrific day at the Confident Group headquarters in Bengaluru's Langford Town. During an Income Tax Department (IT) raid, the company's chairman, CJ Roy, committed suicide in his own office. Roy shot himself in the chest with his licensed pistol, resulting in his death. The incident caused panic among the Income Tax officials and employees present. He was rushed to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
During the interrogation, Roy went to the cabin on the pretext of talking to his mother
According to the incident, around 12 noon on Friday, Income Tax Department teams from Kochi, Kerala, and Bengaluru arrived at Roy's office. At 2 pm, CJ Roy arrived at the office and joined the investigation process. For about an hour, the officers questioned him and reviewed documents. Around 3 pm, Roy told the officers that he would bring some important documents and also needed to speak to his mother. With that, he went to his private cabin. Just 10 minutes later, at 3:10 pm, a loud gunshot rang out from the cabin. When officers and staff rushed inside, Roy was found covered in blood. He was immediately taken to Narayana Hospital in HSR Layout, but it was too late.
He always carried a briefcase and a pistol
According to those close to CJ Roy, he was extremely vigilant about his security. He always carried a briefcase with him, which contained his licensed pistol and some very important documents. One of his associates said that this briefcase was so important to him that if he ever accidentally forgot it, he would immediately send his security personnel to retrieve it. This pistol was the pistol he used for his suicide attempt.
Brother's serious allegation: IT pressure, not financial constraints, took his life
Following this tragic incident, Roy's brother and Whitegold owner CJ Babu has raised serious questions about the Income Tax Department's functioning. Accusing the officials, he said that Roy was under immense mental pressure due to the raids and questioning that had been going on for the past three days. Babu claimed that his brother had no debt and was in a very strong financial position. He categorically stated that the undue pressure exerted by the Income Tax officials was solely responsible for Roy's death.
Police investigation begins, family awaited from Dubai
Given the seriousness of the incident, Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh personally inspected the scene. Police have registered a case of unnatural death and launched an investigation. A ballistics team is examining the pistol, and CCTV footage from the office is also being examined to determine the exact cause of the incident. Roy's wife and two children reportedly live in Dubai and are expected to arrive in Bengaluru by Saturday morning. It's worth noting that CJ Roy was known not only for his involvement in real estate, but also for his filmmaking and social work.
