Gas cylinder safety hack: Why those bottom holes matter

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): LPG cylinders are an essential item in Indian kitchens, used in every household from morning tea to dinner. We see cylinders daily, but often don't notice the details of their design. You may have noticed that the cylinder's bottom ring has circular or square holes. Most people think of this as mere design, but in reality, these holes are directly related to the safety of you and your family.

Air circulation and temperature control are the main reasons

The most important function of these holes at the bottom of the cylinder is to maintain air circulation. LPG gas is very sensitive to temperature. Sometimes, there's a risk of the gas's temperature rising. These holes ensure that air flows continuously beneath the cylinder, keeping the cylinder's surface temperature under control. Without these holes, air could become trapped underneath, and heat or pressure could increase, leading to a major accident or explosion. This is a safety measure that helps keep the cylinder cool.

Prevents the risk of rust and leakage

Besides temperature control, the other major reason for these holes is to protect the cylinder from rust. When a cylinder is placed on the floor, moisture or water often accumulates underneath. Without air circulation, that area will remain wet, and the cylinder's metal will gradually rust. Rust can weaken the cylinder, creating the risk of gas leaks. These holes allow air to dry out moisture and allow water to be easily drained out when washing the cylinder, thus maintaining both its lifespan and safety.

Red color also has special significance

Along with the cylinder's design, there's a specific reason behind its color. Domestic LPG cylinders in India are typically red. Red has the longest wavelength, making it visible from a distance. Since LPG is a highly flammable substance, red is used as a danger signal to alert people and alert them to caution.
