According to the new rule, hallmarking has been made mandatory for the cheapest gold. According to the new rule, now 9 carat gold without BIS hallmark will not be sold. However, this was not the case till now. Hallmarking was not mandatory for 9 carat gold jewellery. For the last few months, the price of gold has been skyrocketing. In such a situation, people are opting for cheap gold. People are buying 9 carat gold instead of 24 carat or 22 carat. Due to the increase in the purchase of cheap 9 carat gold jewellery, the government has changed the rules of hallmarking. People are finding it better to buy low carat gold jewellery, as it puts less burden on the pocket. The government has taken this decision due to the increasing demand for 9 carat gold. The Bureau of Indian Standards, working under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, has made it clear that now hallmarking will be mandatory on 9 carat gold jewellery as well. With this, now you will get the guarantee of purity even while buying low carat cheap gold.

The government has implemented this rule across the country from July 2025. Now jewelers will not be able to sell 9 carat jewelry without BIS hallmark. With hallmarking being mandatory, you get a sure guarantee of the purity of gold. The carat of gold is determined according to its purity. This mark determines how pure the gold you are buying is, how much gold and how much adulteration is there in it. Gold hallmark is a mark, which is given by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). The carat of gold is determined according to its purity and it is marked on the jewelery. Currently there were 24KF, 24 KS, 23 K, 22K, 20K, 18K, 14K, now 9K has also been added to it. Hallmarking is done under the BIS Act, 2016.
