India Boosts Semiconductor Ambitions with 23 Chip Design Projects
New Delhi( The Uttam Hindu): The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has announced approval of 23 chip design projects under its Design Linked Incentive (DLI) scheme. These projects support domestic start-ups and MSMEs developing chips for various applications like surveillance cameras and energy meters. Additionally, 72 companies have been granted access to industry-grade Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools to speed up chip design.
Vervesemi's Contribution to India's Semiconductor Ecosystem
Among the supported firms is Vervesemi Microelectronics, a Bengaluru-based fabless semiconductor company. Vervesemi is developing a range of integrated circuits across strategic and consumer sectors. According to Rakesh Malik, founder and CEO of Vervesemi, these innovations mark a turning point for India's semiconductor ecosystem, driving import substitution and showcasing India's capability to lead globally.
Broader Semiconductor Manufacturing Push
This development is part of the Centre's broader chipmaking push focusing on production and design. The Union cabinet recently cleared four more semiconductor manufacturing projects under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM). With these additions, a total of 10 semiconductor projects worth ₹1.6 trillion are set to be developed across six states. These projects are expected to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs.¹
Details on Upcoming Projects
- The projects involve a combined investment of about ₹4,600 crore.
- Expected to generate direct employment for over 2,000 skilled workers, along with additional indirect job opportunities.
