Mumbai (The Uttam Hindu):The Indian stock market closed in the green for the second consecutive day on Friday. Most indices saw buying. At the close of trading, the Sensex gained 223.86 points, or 0.28 percent, to 81,207.17, and the Nifty gained 57.95 points, or 0.23 percent, to 24,894.25, resulting in gains of ₹2.44 lakh crore for investors.

Metal stocks led the market higher. Nifty Metal closed with a gain of 1.82 percent. Nifty PSU Bank (1.12 percent), Nifty Energy (0.56 percent), Nifty Private Bank (0.65 percent), Nifty Infra (0.55 percent), and Nifty FMCG (0.12 percent) closed with gains. However, Nifty Healthcare (0.22 percent), Nifty Auto (0.06 percent), and Nifty Realty (0.12 percent) closed with losses. Tata Steel, Power Grid, Axis Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, L&T, BEL, Bharti Airtel, Titan, Asian Paints, NTPC, SBI, HCL Tech, and Infosys were the top gainers in the Sensex pack. Tech Mahindra, Maruti Suzuki, UltraTech Cement, Sun Pharma, ICICI Bank, TCS, Bajaj Finserv, and Trent were the top losers. Midcap and smallcap stocks performed better than largecap stocks. The Nifty Midcap 100 index was up 473.65 points, or 0.83 per cent, at 57,503.35, and the Nifty Smallcap 100 index was up 122.30 points, or 0.69 per cent, at 17,878.15.

Market experts said that after remaining in a narrow range, the market closed on a positive note on the back of gains in metal and consumer durables stocks. A weak dollar and stable base metal prices, driven by optimism about a possible interest rate cut by the Fed in October, fuelled the rally in metal stocks. On the other hand, consumer stocks are witnessing a rally due to increased disposable income due to GST reforms, a good monsoon and softening inflation.

The stock market started on a subdued note. At 9:23 am, the Sensex was down 113 points, or 0.14 percent, at 80,850, and the Nifty was down 53 points, or 0.22 percent, at 24,782.
