New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The country's largest car manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL), has recalled over 39,000 units of its popular SUV, the Grand Vitara. The company took this step after a technical defect was discovered in the SUV's fuel gauge system. The recall covers a total of 39,506 Grand Vitara units manufactured between December 9, 2024, and April 29, 2025.

What's the problem?

Maruti Suzuki has stated in a regulatory filing that the affected models have been found to have a defect in the fuel level indicator (fuel gauge) and warning light located in the speedometer assembly.

According to the company, this indicator sometimes fails to accurately reflect the actual fuel level in the tank. This can lead to drivers not being able to accurately assess the fuel remaining in the tank, posing a potential risk.

Maruti Suzuki has clarified that owners of vehicles affected by this recall will be contacted directly by the company or its authorized dealers. Customers will be invited to their nearest Maruti Suzuki workshop, where expert technicians will inspect the component.

If a defect is found, the part will be replaced. This entire process (inspection and repair) will be completely free of charge for customers. The company has described this as a "precautionary step" and urged customers to respond as soon as possible.

This recall comes at a time when Maruti Suzuki is rapidly expanding its SUV portfolio. The Grand Vitara, developed in collaboration with Toyota, is the company's flagship compact SUV, which is popular due to features like a strong hybrid powertrain and all-wheel drive.

Following the recent GST reform, the company has reduced the Grand Vitara's price by up to ₹107,000. Prices for the SUV now start at ₹10.77 lakh and go up to ₹19.72 lakh (ex-showroom).
