PM Modi flags off India's first Vande Bharat sleeper train: know the fare and rules here
Kolkata/Guwahati (The Uttam Hindu): A new chapter was added to the history of Indian Railways on Saturday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the country's first "Vande Bharat Sleeper Train." This train will run between Howrah in West Bengal and Guwahati in Assam. This train will not only facilitate connectivity in Northeast India but will also boost tourism and trade. This fully air-conditioned 16-coach train will run on the tracks six days a week.
Airplane-like amenities and 3 hours savings
This modern train has a total capacity of 823 passengers. Its biggest features are its speed and amenities. It will cover the approximately 958-kilometer distance between Howrah and Guwahati in just 14 hours, approximately two and a half to three hours less than other trains currently operating. With a design speed of 180 kilometers per hour, this train features a state-of-the-art suspension system, automatic doors, and comfortable berths to reduce jolts. Importantly, passengers will also be able to savor regional Bengali and Assamese cuisine during the journey.
Fare math: Minimum charge for 400 km
The Railway Board has also finalized the fare structure for this premium train, which is significantly different from regular trains. According to information provided by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav, the minimum distance limit for this train is 400 kilometers. This means that even if a passenger travels less than 400 kilometers (such as 100 or 200 kilometers), they will have to pay the fare for the full 400 kilometers. Passengers will have to pay a minimum of ₹960 for AC-3 tier, ₹1,240 for AC-2 tier, and ₹1,520 for AC-1 (First Class). If the journey exceeds 400 kilometers, charges will be added based on the rate of ₹3.20 for AC-1, ₹3.10 for AC-2, and ₹2.40 for AC-3 per kilometer. GST will be applicable on these fares separately.
RAC tickets will not be available, only confirmed seats will be available
Those traveling on the Vande Bharat Sleeper will have to follow strict booking rules. According to a Railway Board circular, there is no provision for Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC), waiting list, or partially confirmed tickets on this train. Passengers will only be issued confirmed tickets, meaning they must be provided with a full berth. Furthermore, quotas have been limited. Only women's reservations, disabled reservations, senior citizens' reservations, and duty pass reservations will be valid on the train. No other quotas will apply.
