RBI Reveals 2000 Rupee Notes Worth 5817 Crore Still in Circulation, 3 Years After Withdrawal
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The ₹2,000 notes that were withdrawn from circulation in 2023 have not yet been fully returned. According to the RBI, as of October 31, 2025, notes worth ₹5,817 crore are still in circulation. This represents approximately 1.63% of the total notes issued, while 98.37% have been returned.
3 years have passed… people still have Rs 5,817 crore, RBI gives a big update on Rs 2,000 note: The RBI announced the withdrawal of the Rs 2,000 note from circulation on May 19, 2023. At that time, notes worth Rs 3.56 lakh crore were in circulation. These notes were issued after the 2016 demonetization and were later removed under the clean note policy.
Initially, these notes were available for exchange at all banks until October 7, 2023, but now this process is limited to 19 RBI regional offices in Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Lucknow, and other cities. People can still deposit these notes into their bank accounts at any Reserve Bank of India office or through India Post.
