Tesla's Price Puzzle: How Rs 33 Lakh Tax Inflates Cost of Rs 27 Lakh Car in India
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Electric car maker Tesla on Tuesday launched its rear-wheel drive (RWD) Model Y car in India, which has a starting price of Rs 59.89 lakh (ex-showroom). According to the price list published on its website, the price of Tesla Model Y Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive will be Rs 67.89 lakh. People are surprised to see the price of this car and are also expressing anger on social media. Because heavy taxes have been imposed on Tesla cars in India, due to which the price of a car worth Rs 27 lakh is reaching Rs 60 lakh.
According to Tesla's Indian website, the price of one model is Rs 59.89 lakh and the other is Rs 67.89 lakh. Now many people are confused after hearing these prices, because in America this car is available for about Rs 33 lakh with tax. Then why is it being sold so expensive in India. Actually, Tesla is not manufacturing its vehicles in India right now. These cars are made in China and are imported from there to India. In India, 70 percent import duty is levied on electric vehicles. Apart from this, 30 percent luxury tax also has to be paid. This is the reason why almost half of the price of the car is going to the government treasury in the form of tax. People are venting their anger on social media regarding Tesla's prices and tax. Many users even jokingly named Tesla 'Tax-la'.
The Model Y will initially be available in Mumbai, Delhi, and Gurugram. The cabin features a 15.4-inch front touchscreen infotainment system, an 8-inch rear touchscreen, powered front seats with ventilation, powered two-way folding and heated second-row, footwell and door pocket ambient lighting, wrap-around ambient lighting, and nine speakers.
