Train travel to get cheaper? ₹3000 ticket could cost ₹1500, check here
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Millions of rail passengers across the country are eagerly awaiting the upcoming Union Budget 2026. This time, significant news is expected, especially for senior citizens. According to media reports and sources, Indian Railways is seriously considering reinstating the ticket discounts offered to elderly passengers prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. If Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman approves this proposal in the budget, it would be a significant gift for senior citizens.
When did the concession end?
Before March 2020, Indian Railways offered special discounts to senior passengers. However, this facility was suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, it is reported that the Ministry of Railways and the Ministry of Finance have discussed reinstating this facility.
Who will benefit?
According to sources, if the proposal is approved in the budget, men aged 60 and above and women aged 58 and above will be able to re-enjoy the concessional fares. This discount could apply to all classes, from sleeper to first-AC.
How much will the discount be?
Under the pre-COVID-19 system, women received a 50 percent discount. This means they would only have to pay 1,500 rupees for a First AC ticket costing 3,000 rupees. Men received a 40 percent discount, meaning they would have to pay 1,800 rupees for a 3,000 rupee ticket. Restoring this facility will make long-distance pilgrimages, visits to children, or family financially easier for middle-class families.
Railway Preparations
While the Railway Ministry has yet to make an official announcement, sources indicate that final consideration is underway to include this proposal in the budget. Senior citizens and their families are already excited about this news.
