New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Air pollution levels in the capital Delhi have reached dangerous levels. Breathing is becoming increasingly difficult. In response, GRAP Phase 3 has been implemented, but the agencies responsible for implementing its regulations appear to be failing to effectively enforce them.

According to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Delhi's Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 407 at 7 am on Thursday, which falls in the 'severe' category. The AQI crossed 400 in many areas of the capital. Thick toxic smog lingered around India Gate and Kartavya Path. According to the CPCB, the AQI of this area was recorded at 396 in the 'very poor' category.

Delhi-NCR faces respiratory distress, with toxic air for the third consecutive day; AQI exceeds 450 in many areas: AQI was recorded at 455 in Daryaganj, 431 in Anand Vihar, 418 in Alipur, 433 in Burari, 460 in Bawana, 456 in Chandni Chowk, 401 in Dwarka, 438 in ITO and 447 in Jahangirpuri. Whereas, in the cities adjoining Delhi, AQI of Noida was 366, Ghaziabad 409 and Gurugram 388. Earlier, on Wednesday, the average AQI of Delhi was 418. For the second consecutive day, Delhi remained the most polluted city of the country, while Noida remained at the second position.

Burning garbage, storing construction materials in the open, private construction, and the use of coal-fired ovens have become commonplace in many areas of the capital. Diesel generators are also operating in industrial units in non-conforming areas. Broken roads, dusty sidewalks, and scattered debris have further worsened the situation.
