DU's Deepika Jha suspended, barred from campuses after slapping professor
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) Joint Secretary Deepika Jha has been suspended for two months for allegedly slapping Professor Sujeet Kumar at BR Ambedkar College. She has been barred from entering any Delhi University college campus during this period.
Furthermore, the order issued states that Deepika Jha will also have to apologize in writing to Prof. Sujit Kumar for her actions.
This incident sparked widespread outrage among faculty members, following which the Delhi University administration formed a six-member committee to investigate the attack on the teacher. The committee investigated the matter and submitted its report, based on which this disciplinary action has been taken against Deepika Jha.
The order stated, "The committee concluded that Deepika Jha's conduct was unbecoming of a student and a DUSU official. This incident was a serious violation of the discipline and decorum expected within the university community. This act of assault constitutes gross indiscipline under the university's rules and regulations."
According to Prof. Sujit Kumar, a teacher at Ambedkar College, he suspended a student from his college for assaulting another student representative. The accused student had previously been accused of assault.
The accused student called Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) officials to protest the college's action. A discussion regarding the matter was taking place in the principal's room, in the presence of police. It is alleged that during this discussion, Deepika Jha lost her temper and slapped Professor Sujit Kumar.
The entire incident was captured on CCTV cameras installed in the principal's room, and the video later went viral on social media. The DU Teachers' Association (DUTA) expressed strong displeasure over the incident, calling it an attack on the dignity of a teacher and demanding strict action.
