Mathura (The Uttam Hindu): A major road accident occurred late Tuesday night on the Yamuna Expressway in Mathura due to dense fog. Multiple buses and cars travelling from Agra towards Noida collided with each other, triggering a massive fire. The tragic incident claimed the lives of four passengers, while around 25 people were injured. All the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals, and their condition is reported to be stable.

The accident took place near milestone 127 close to Khadehra village under the Baldev police station area. As soon as the information was received, teams from the Mathura police, fire department, and ambulance services reached the spot. Rescue and relief operations were immediately launched to control the fire and evacuate trapped passengers. The bodies of the deceased have been sent for post-mortem, while alternative transport arrangements were made to help stranded passengers reach their destinations.

Eyewitnesses said the fog was so dense that visibility was almost zero, leading to a chain collision involving eight buses and three cars. Several passengers were trapped inside the vehicles, while some managed to save themselves by jumping out. Those stuck inside lost their lives after being caught in the fire. Taking cognizance of the incident, the Chief Minister directed authorities to ensure proper treatment for the injured and announced an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh each for the families of the deceased.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has warned that dense fog may continue in parts of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh on December 17. Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Himachal Pradesh are also expected to experience foggy and cold conditions in the coming days. A drop of around two degrees Celsius in north-west India is likely, which may further intensify the cold.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed deep sorrow over the incident, conveyed condolences to the bereaved families through a social media post, and wished a speedy recovery to the injured. He also instructed the district administration to ensure there is no lapse in relief and medical assistance.
