New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): A massive fire broke out late Wednesday night in the Matiala area of Uttam Nagar, quickly engulfing nearly 400 slum huts and triggering panic in the neighbourhood. The blaze reportedly started near the Matiala fish market around 11 pm and spread rapidly within minutes. Flames and thick smoke could be seen from a distance, turning the night sky red and forcing nearby residents to rush out of their homes.

Eyewitnesses said smoke was first noticed rising from a few huts, but the fire soon intensified and spread quickly because the houses were built very close to each other. Residents tried to evacuate in haste to save their lives, leaving behind most of their belongings. Within a short time, the flames had consumed several huts, reducing household items and valuables to ashes.

Fire officials received an alert about the incident at 11:54 pm, following which several fire brigade teams rushed to the spot. Around 25 fire engines were deployed to control the blaze, which was finally brought under control at about 3:25 am after hours of effort. Nearly 400 huts were reportedly destroyed, leaving many families homeless, though fortunately no casualties have been reported.
