Toxic air grips Delhi even before Diwali, AQI above 350 in many zones
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Pollution levels in Delhi are rising rapidly even before Diwali, affecting people's health. A thick haze has enveloped the air in the morning and evening, and people in many areas are complaining of eye irritation, sore throats, and difficulty breathing. The capital's air quality was recorded in the "very poor" category on Friday morning.
Even before Diwali, people in Delhi are finding it difficult to breathe, with AQI crossing 350 in many areas. : According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the average Air Quality Index (AQI) of Delhi was recorded at 367 at 8 am. The situation was most worrying in Anand Vihar, where the AQI reached 370. The level was recorded at 328 in Wazirpur, 324 in Jahangirpuri and 369 in Akshardham. Apart from this, AQI was found to be more than 200 in many parts of Delhi, which is considered in the 'poor' category.
Experts say that the onset of winter in northern India, slower wind speeds, and increased stubble burning could further exacerbate pollution levels in Delhi-NCR. Vehicle exhaust, dust from construction work, and fireworks could also further deteriorate air quality.
In light of the growing threat, the Delhi government on Thursday evening released its Winter Action Plan for 2025-26, effective immediately. The plan includes seven key themes and 25 action points. These include measures such as stubble management, road dust control, industrial emissions monitoring, garbage ban, promotion of public transportation, and the use of green firecrackers.
The government has also appealed to citizens to cooperate in controlling pollution – avoid unnecessary vehicle use, do not burn garbage in the open and report any pollution-related activity on the 'Green Delhi App'.
