Shimla (The Uttam Hindu): Heavy snowfall in Shimla and the upper reaches of the district has closed most of the roads. Roads in major areas like Kufri, Narkanda, Khidki, and Kharapathar are completely blocked, making vehicular movement difficult. In light of the situation, the Shimla Police have issued an advisory for travelers.

This snowfall, the first of the season, is exciting many tourists and locals, but it's also proving dangerous. Police say the slick and compacted snow on the roads can cause vehicles to skid, increasing the risk of accidents.

Shimla Police has appealed to the general public and tourists to avoid unnecessary travel. If travel is necessary due to an emergency, choose safe alternative routes and exercise extreme caution.

Police said emergency assistance can be sought immediately from the police assistance desk or the nearest police station. In case of an emergency, people are advised to call 112. According to the Meteorological Department, snowfall may continue in the upper reaches for the next few days, making roads even more slippery.

This advisory comes at a time when Shimla is witnessing a large influx of tourists. Snowfall has blanketed the city in a blanket of white, but snow and black ice on the roads have disrupted traffic. Power supply has also been disrupted in many areas. Police have advised using four-wheel-drive vehicles and wearing chain links, but have urged avoiding non-essential travel.

In its advisory, Shimla Police has stated that safety is a top priority. Locals and tourists are enjoying the snow, but the police urge them to stay indoors or in hotels. If traveling, they should follow weather updates and police advice.
