“A simple man like me became Prime Minister… this is the strength of our Constitution’': PM Modi’s letter to the nation
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): India celebrates Constitution Day every year on 26 November. On this occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote a letter to the people of the country, expressing his faith in the Constitution and sharing personal reflections. He recalled that in 2015, the government officially declared 26 November as Constitution Day.
PM Modi wrote that the strength of India’s Constitution enabled someone from an ordinary family like him to lead governments for more than 24 years. He mentioned that he still remembers the moment he first entered Parliament in 2014 and bowed at its steps. After winning the 2019 elections, he touched the Constitution to his forehead as a mark of respect.
The Prime Minister paid tribute to Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, the women members of the Constituent Assembly, and all those who shaped the Constitution. He also mentioned events such as the Constitution Gaurav Yatra and the special session of Parliament, which saw large public participation.
He added that this year’s Constitution Day holds even greater significance because it coincides with the 150th birth anniversaries of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Bhagwan Birsa Munda, 150 years of Vande Mataram, and the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji. These milestones, he said, remind citizens of the duties outlined in the Constitution.
Looking ahead, PM Modi said that in the coming decades, India will mark 100 years of Independence and 100 years of the Constitution. Decisions made today will shape the future of generations to come. He urged citizens to prioritise their duties as the country moves forward with the goal of becoming a developed India.
Modi suggested that schools and colleges should honour newly eligible 18-year-old voters as part of Constitution Day celebrations to raise awareness among youth. He concluded by appealing to citizens to fulfil their responsibilities and contribute to building a stronger India.
On social media platform X, the Prime Minister also paid tribute to the makers of the Constitution and said that it places human dignity, equality and freedom at the highest level while reminding citizens of their civic duties.
