Chhindwara (The Uttam Hindu): Following the death of nine children in Chhindwara, the Madhya Pradesh government has imposed a statewide ban on the sale of Coldrif cough syrup. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav stated that those responsible will not be spared under any circumstances. On social media platform X, CM Yadav wrote, “The deaths of children in Chhindwara due to Coldrif syrup are deeply tragic. The sale of this syrup has been banned across Madhya Pradesh. Other products from the manufacturer are also being restricted. The factory is located in Kanchipuram (Tamil Nadu), so the state government immediately requested an investigation by the Tamil Nadu authorities. Strict action is being taken after receiving the report.”

Earlier, the local Chhindwara administration had already imposed a district-wide ban on Coldrif and Nextro-DS syrups. The state government has now formed a special investigation team to examine the distribution chain, supply network, and the role of doctors. Teams from the Central Health Ministry and National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) have also reached the site to assist in sample testing.

Reports indicate that in the Parasia area of Chhindwara, children’s health deteriorated after consuming the syrup, which was suggested by local doctors for treating viral fever. Several children were admitted to hospitals in Chhindwara and Nagpur, but unfortunately, they could not be saved.

The deceased include Shivam, Vidhi, Adnan, Usaid, Rishika, Hetansh, Vikas, Chanchalesh, and Sandhya. Families have alleged that a common cold and cough medicine claimed the lives of their innocent children. The health department has urged parents not to give any medicine to children without consulting a registered doctor. Additionally, a screening campaign for over 1,400 children is underway in the district to identify potentially affected children in time.
