Air India Express flight bound for Kozhikode makes emergency landing, 160 passengers narrowly safe
Kochi (The Uttam Hindu): A major aviation mishap was averted on Thursday after an Air India Express aircraft carrying around 160 passengers made an emergency landing in Kochi following a technical snag. Flight AIX-398 was operating from Jeddah in Saudi Arabia to Kozhikode when the pilot detected a problem with the aircraft’s landing gear mid-air.
Acting swiftly, the pilot sought permission for an emergency diversion and landing at Cochin International Airport. After the distress message was received, airport authorities immediately activated full emergency protocols.
According to officials, the aircraft landed safely at around 9:07 am, with fire and rescue teams, medical staff, and security personnel deployed along the runway as a precautionary measure.
Post-landing inspection revealed that two tyres of the aircraft had burst, confirming the seriousness of the technical issue and validating the crew’s timely decision to divert the flight to Kochi. Officials of Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) coordinated the emergency response and post-landing procedures, ensuring that all passengers were safely escorted to the terminal.
Airport sources said all emergency systems functioned smoothly as per standard operating procedures. Passengers have been accommodated in the airport lounge, and arrangements are being made for their onward journey. Air India Express officials stated that efforts are underway to operate an alternative flight to Kozhikode or provide suitable ground transportation.
In case of further delay or cancellation, the airline has assured passengers that they will be transported by road to Kozhikode, which is around a seven-hour drive from Kochi. Airline representatives are providing refreshments and assistance to passengers while they await further updates.
