New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): An Air India flight (AI-176) operating from San Francisco to Delhi made an emergency landing in Mongolia on Friday after experiencing a technical malfunction mid-air, officials confirmed. The Boeing 777 aircraft, carrying over 250 passengers, landed safely at Chinggis Khaan International Airport in Ulaanbaatar, where it received immediate technical inspection and assistance.

According to Air India, the pilots detected a technical anomaly in the aircraft’s systems while flying over Mongolian airspace. Following standard safety protocol, the crew decided to divert the flight as a precautionary measure. The decision ensured the safety of all passengers and crew on board.

Airline engineers and local ground staff in Ulaanbaatar are currently assessing the aircraft, while arrangements are being made to accommodate and assist passengers. Air India stated that a relief aircraft is being dispatched from Delhi to bring the passengers back to India.

“The flight crew took immediate and appropriate action as per global aviation safety procedures. All passengers are safe, and we are extending full support to them during the delay,” Air India said in an official statement.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has also been informed, and the matter is being monitored closely. While the exact cause of the malfunction has not been disclosed, preliminary reports suggest a possible issue with onboard sensors or engine monitoring systems.

Passengers have lauded the crew’s calm response during the emergency, with several sharing on social media that the landing was handled with “remarkable professionalism.”

This incident comes as Air India continues to modernize its fleet under the Tata Group’s revival plan, which includes massive investments in aircraft safety upgrades and new-generation jets.
