Air travel-style rules to apply on trains as Railways to charge extra for excess luggage
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu) – Important news for train passengers. Passengers will now have to pay additional fees for carrying luggage beyond the permitted limit. The Railways has clarified that baggage rules will be stricter, just as they are for air travel.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav provided information in the Lok Sabha regarding this matter. He stated that a fee will be charged for carrying luggage in excess of the prescribed limit on trains. He provided this information in a written response to a question asked by MP Vemireddy Prabhakar Reddy. In response to this question, the Railway Minister addressed the issue of charging extra luggage. Ashwini Vaishnav stated that currently, a maximum limit has been set for the category of luggage a passenger can carry in a compartment.
Class-wise baggage limits
According to the data presented in Parliament-
Second Class:
Passengers can carry a maximum of 35 kilograms of luggage free of charge. If necessary, up to 70 kilograms of luggage is permitted, but an additional fee is applicable.
Sleeper Class:
Passengers are allowed to carry up to 40 kilograms of luggage free of charge. For a fee, they can carry up to 80 kilograms.
AC 3 Tier and Chair Car:
Passengers traveling in these classes can carry a maximum of 40 kilograms of luggage, and this is the limit. This decision by the Railways requires passengers to plan their luggage before traveling to avoid additional charges.
