Hazaribagh (The Uttam Hindu): A sensational incident has emerged from Jharkhand’s Hazaribagh, where three prisoners serving life sentences have escaped from the Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan Central Jail (JP Jail). The incident has raised serious questions over the security arrangements and functioning of the prison administration in what is considered one of the most secure jails in the state. All three escaped prisoners are reported to be residents of Dhanbad district.

According to information received, the prisoners were brought out of their barracks on Wednesday during the routine headcount. During this process, the three inmates suddenly went missing. Initially, jail staff suspected that the prisoners might still be somewhere inside the premises and conducted an internal search. However, when no trace was found even after an extensive search, panic spread within the jail administration. Senior officials and the police were then informed about the escape.

What makes the incident more shocking is that JP Jail is counted among the most secure prisons in Jharkhand. It has a five-layer security system, CCTV surveillance, and armed guards deployed at every entry and exit point. The escape of three life-term convicts despite such tight security points towards serious negligence and exposes major lapses in the security mechanism.

After the incident, an intensive search operation was launched inside the jail premises and surrounding areas, but no clue about the escaped prisoners was found till late night. The jail superintendent has so far declined to comment on the matter.

It is noteworthy that just four days ago, Jharkhand DGP Tadasa Mishra had conducted a surprise inspection of JP Jail. She spent the entire day reviewing security arrangements, prisoner conditions, and administrative preparedness along with senior officials. The escape occurring just days after this inspection has raised questions over the administration’s claims.

At present, special police and administrative teams have been formed to arrest the escaped prisoners, and raids are being conducted at possible hideouts. Preparations are also underway to initiate an internal inquiry into the security lapse. Strict action is expected against officials and personnel found responsible for the incident.
