New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is emerging as the single largest party in Bihar. Early trends from the Election Commission show the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) leading in nearly 200 seats, well above the majority mark of 122.

The BJP alone is leading in 93 constituencies, marking a historic victory for the party in Bihar in the last 45 years. These figures mark a significant shift in Bihar's political direction.

In the 2010 assembly elections, the NDA – which was then powered by a strong JDU-BJP partnership – had won a landslide victory, winning 206 of the 243 seats, with the JD(U) winning 115 and the BJP 91.

The picture changed in 2015, when the BJP was reduced to 53 seats after the formation of the Grand Alliance led by Nitish Kumar, Lalu Prasad Yadav and the Congress.

The 2020 assembly elections saw the toughest contest. The NDA came up just short of a majority with 125 seats, while the Grand Alliance secured 110. The RJD emerged as the largest party with 75 seats, followed by the BJP in second place with 74. The JD(U) was reduced to 43 seats.

However, trends for 2025 indicate a dramatic reversal of that pattern. The BJP has not only regained lost ground but also appears poised to dominate the landscape, surpassing the RJD and even its long-time ally, the JD(U), by a significant margin.

It is noteworthy that BJP had won 37 seats in 2005, 67 seats in 2000, 41 seats in 1995, 39 seats in 1990, 16 seats in 1985 and 21 seats in 1980.

If the lead holds, Friday's results could mark the BJP's most decisive performance ever in Bihar's electoral history, shaping the equations within the NDA and setting the stage for a new political chapter in the state.
