New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): March is observed as Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month to highlight the increasing cases of cancers affecting the colon and rectum and the importance of early diagnosis. On this occasion, a specialist from Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute stressed the need for greater awareness, timely screening and healthier lifestyle habits to reduce deaths caused by colorectal cancer. The expert noted that although the disease is often considered common among older people, an increasing number of younger patients are now being diagnosed mainly because early symptoms are mild and frequently ignored.

Doctors explained that unhealthy eating habits, low fibre intake, obesity, smoking, alcohol consumption, physical inactivity and a family history of cancer increase the risk of colorectal cancer. Cases are rising steadily particularly in urban areas and many patients seek treatment only when the disease has already progressed. People are advised to consult a doctor if they notice symptoms such as persistent changes in bowel habits, blood in stool, unexplained weight loss, continuous abdominal discomfort or a feeling of incomplete bowel movement lasting more than two weeks.

In advanced cases, treatment may involve chemotherapy followed by surgery to remove the affected portion of the colon or rectum. Some patients may require a colostomy, a procedure in which an opening is created in the abdominal wall to allow waste to pass into an external bag. Experts said that although adjusting to life after colostomy can be emotionally challenging at first, proper guidance and modern medical support help patients lead normal lives. Doctors recommend colonoscopy screening from the age of 45 or earlier for those with a family history, as early detection and a healthy lifestyle can significantly improve survival chances.
