New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu) : The monsoon has gained momentum across many parts of India, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a red alert for coastal regions of Kerala, Goa, and Karnataka for Monday, June 16. The alert warns of heavy rainfall, strong winds, and potential waterlogging in these areas. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are also expected in several other parts of the country.
Kerala: Heavy Rainfall Shuts Down Schools
Kerala has been witnessing torrential rains since Sunday, and the IMD predicts this pattern will persist until at least June 18. On Monday, red alerts were issued in five districts, while six districts are under orange alert. In response, authorities have declared holidays in all educational institutions across several districts, including Thrissur, Malappuram, Kannur, Wayanad, Kottayam, Kozhikode, Idukki, Ernakulam, Pathanamthitta, and Kasargod. A yellow alert has been issued for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Alappuzha, with warnings of waves up to 3.4 meters in the coastal areas. Fishermen have been strictly advised not to venture into the sea until June 18.
Delhi-NCR: Rain Brings Relief from Heat
In the national capital and surrounding areas, rain since Sunday morning has provided much-needed relief from the scorching heat. Rainfall between 30 to 40 mm was recorded in several places. However, power outages were reported in some localities due to the downpour.
An orange alert has been issued for parts of Delhi, including North-West, South-West, and South-East Delhi, with a forecast of thunderstorms, lightning, and winds reaching 50–60 km/h. Delhi's maximum temperature on Sunday was 41.8°C, which is expected to dip to around 37°C on Monday, while the minimum may fall to 23°C.
Rainfall in Chhattisgarh and Odisha
Light to moderate rainfall accompanied by strong winds and lightning is expected in Chhattisgarh and Odisha. Authorities have advised people to avoid sheltering under large trees and to remain in safe locations during storms.
Scorching Heat in Northern India: Varanasi Hottest
While many regions are experiencing monsoon showers, northern India continues to battle intense heat. On June 15, Varanasi recorded the highest temperature in the country at 43.2°C. Other hot spots included Orai, Ghazipur, Bathinda (Punjab), Sirsa (Haryana), Singrauli (Madhya Pradesh), and Churu (Rajasthan), with temperatures hovering around 41–42°C.
