Earthquake Tremors Felt from Kolkata to Dhaka, Magnitude Recorded at 5.6
Kolkata (The Uttam Hindu): Kolkata and several nearby regions experienced earthquake tremors on Friday morning. The quake measured 5.6 on the Richter scale, with its epicenter located in Bangladesh’s Tungi area. As soon as the tremors were felt, people rushed out of their homes in panic. The earthquake occurred at 10:10 AM.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, the epicenter was about 27 kilometers east of Tungi and at a depth of 10 kilometers. Tremors were felt not only in Kolkata but also in adjoining districts and parts of North Bengal. People in Cooch Behar and Dinajpur also reported light shaking.
Fortunately, there are no reports of damage or casualties from anywhere in the state. Earlier the same morning, Pakistan recorded a 5.2-magnitude earthquake at a depth of around 135 kilometers.
The National Centre for Seismology also reported a 4.3-magnitude earthquake in the Indian Ocean during the night between Thursday and Friday. Light tremors were recorded in Afghanistan as well, where the epicenter was about 190 kilometers deep and the intensity measured 4.2.
