ECI Warns Parties: No AI-Based Fake or Deepfake Content in Campaigns
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): With the announcement of the Bihar Assembly elections and bypolls on eight assembly seats across seven states, the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) came into effect on October 6. Soon after, the Election Commission of India (ECI) issued an important advisory, cautioning all political parties not to use AI-generated or misleading videos during election campaigns.
The Commission emphasized that the rules of the Model Code of Conduct apply not only to on-ground campaigning but also to content shared on social media and digital platforms.
It clarified that criticism of any political party or candidate should be limited to their policies, programs, records, and performance—and personal attacks or character-based comments are strictly prohibited. Moreover, spreading unverified, manipulated, or distorted information about any political entity will be treated as a serious violation of election norms.
Expressing deep concern, the ECI noted that some individuals are using AI tools to create deepfake videos and spread misinformation online, potentially disturbing the integrity of the electoral process.
To curb this, the Commission directed all political parties, leaders, candidates, and star campaigners to ensure transparency while sharing AI-generated or digitally altered content. Such posts must carry a clear label or disclaimer stating phrases like “AI-generated,” “Digitally Enhanced,” or “Synthetic Content,” so that voters are not misled.
The ECI has also tightened digital surveillance to monitor social media activity closely. It reiterated that any violation of the MCC or related digital communication guidelines will invite strict legal action. Upholding the fairness, transparency, and integrity of elections remains the Commission’s top priority.
