ED cracks down in Delhi blast case, attaches Al-Falah University assets worth Rs 140 crore
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu) – The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday attached properties belonging to Al-Falah University in Faridabad. These properties include university buildings, school and department buildings, hostels, and 54 acres of land in the Dhauj area, valued at approximately ₹140 crore. The ED classified these properties as proceeds of crime and initiated action under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
A charge sheet has also been filed against the university's chairman, Jawad Ahmed Siddiqui, and his trust. The university was linked to the Delhi bombings, in which Dr. Umar Un Nabi detonated a car bomb near the Red Fort on November 10, killing 15 people.
The ED stated that the university and its trust defrauded students and parents by falsely claiming accreditation and identity, thereby amassing proceeds of crime totaling ₹415.10 crore. The investigation revealed that nine shell companies were registered at the same address, and the same mobile number was used for several of the companies. EPFO records were also found missing.
The ED said that if the court approves the provisional seizure, the government can appoint an officer to manage the university. This will not affect the students' studies.
The Haryana government, also preparing to tighten its grip on universities,
passed the Haryana Private Universities Amendment Bill, 2025, on December 22. Under the new provisions, if a university fails to comply with matters related to national security, national integrity, or public safety, the government can take over its administration and take action against the university. This initiative was taken for security reasons and this provision was not present in the previous bill.
