Filmmaker Vikram Sugumaran Dies at the Age of 47

Chennai (The Uttam Hindu): Acclaimed film director Vikram Sugumaran passed away on Monday in Chennai due to cardiac arrest. He was 47 years old and was best known for his critically acclaimed directorial debut “Madha Yaanai Koottam.” Sugumaran suffered severe chest pain while returning from Madurai after narrating a new script to a producer. Although he was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, doctors were unable to revive him.

He began his career in cinema as an assistant to legendary director Balu Mahendra between 1999 and 2000. He later rose to prominence with “Madha Yaanai Koottam,” a rural drama praised for its compelling storytelling. His most recent directorial venture was “Raavan Kottam,” featuring actor Shanthanu Bhagyaraj in the lead role. His sudden demise sent a wave of shock and grief across social media. Fans and several celebrities from the Tamil film industry expressed their condolences online.

Paying tribute, Shanthanu wrote on platform X (formerly Twitter):

"RIP dear brother. I’ve learned so much from you and will cherish those moments forever. You left too soon. You will be missed deeply.” Vikram Sugumaran was working on a new project titled “Theram Poram.” In a recent media interaction, he had mentioned being betrayed by certain people in the film industry, though he did not name anyone. Sources close to the director revealed that he had just narrated a script to a producer in Madurai and was about to take a bus back to Chennai when the incident occurred. Despite receiving immediate medical attention, he could not be saved. Vikram Sugumaran is survived by his wife and children, who live in Chennai. He was especially known for his films set in rural backdrops, and his passing marks a significant loss for Tamil cinema.
