Warning issued: Fruit juices sold as ORS banned across all states
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu) - If you're blindly purchasing any packet or bottle labeled as ORS, beware. Many companies are selling fruit juices and electrolyte drinks disguised as genuine ORS. Taking a strong stance on this serious fraud, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has directed all states to immediately halt the sale of such products, conduct raids, and initiate action.
People were being misled by making the packaging look like the original
FSSAI says that many brands are using ORS like packaging, writing “ORS” in big letters on the pack, whereas their products do not contain the original ORS formula recommended by WHO, nor are they drinks with any therapeutic effect. This act is a clear violation of the Food Safety Act 2006. FSSAI had earlier issued a similar warning on 15th October, but fake products continued to be sold in the market – hence strict action has been ordered now.
FSSAI clarified that there is no ban on genuine medical ORS. FSSAI has asked states to immediately inspect e-commerce platforms and stores. They have also been instructed to remove counterfeit products, take regulatory action against companies, and submit reports to Delhi. FSSAI acknowledged that despite orders, such products are being sold in the market, making strict action necessary.
