New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The central government has taken a strict step to curb rising cases of digital arrest scams by directing WhatsApp to block device IDs used in such fraudulent activities.

Action based on cyber crime report

The move comes following a report by the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), operating under the Ministry of Home Affairs. Authorities observed that cyber criminals frequently create new accounts to target victims, prompting the government to focus on blocking devices at the hardware level.

Stronger security measures under consideration

The government is also considering implementing advanced security features on platforms like WhatsApp, similar to those used by Skype. Additionally, under IT Rules 2021, there is a proposal to retain data of deleted accounts for up to 180 days to assist investigation agencies.

Plans are also in place to identify and block malicious APK files and fake applications used in such scams.

Why device ID blocking matters

With widespread use of WhatsApp in India, fraudsters exploit the platform to carry out scams. Blocking device IDs aims to prevent repeat offenders from accessing the platform even after creating new accounts.

A device ID is a unique identifier for any gadget, similar to an Aadhaar number for individuals. Key types include:

IMEI number: Identifies mobile devices on networks

MAC address: Used for network and Wi-Fi identification

Device serial number: Assigned by the manufacturer

Advertising ID: Used for apps and targeted advertising

What is digital arrest scam

In digital arrest scams, fraudsters impersonate police or government officials and threaten victims with fake legal action. They use WhatsApp calls, video calls, or messages to intimidate individuals and extort money.

Victims are often told to appear in another city for investigation. When they are unable to do so, scammers force them to stay on video calls under the pretext of a “digital investigation,” creating fear and psychological pressure.

Such cases have seen a sharp rise in recent years, leading to significant financial losses for many people.
