Grief Unfolds: 220 DNA Identified, Families Receive 202 Loved Ones
Ahmedabad (The Uttam Hindu): The DNA samples of 220 people who died in the plane crash in Ahmedabad, Gujarat on June 12 have been matched. Gujarat Health Minister Rishikesh Patel on Friday shared information about DNA matching on the social media platform X.
Gujarat Health Minister Rishikesh Patel wrote on Twitter, "As of 11:45 am on Friday, there has been significant progress in the process of identifying the bodies and handing them over to their families. So far, 220 DNA samples have been matched and 220 families have been contacted for DNA matching, while 202 bodies have been handed over to their families." Rishikesh Patel further said, "202 bodies have been handed over to the families, which include 151 Indian citizens, 34 British, 7 Portuguese and one Canadian citizen. Apart from this, there are nine Indians among the dead who were not passengers. Out of these 202, 15 bodies have been transferred by air and 187 by road through ambulances."
He said that efforts are on to send the remaining bodies to their families as soon as possible. On Thursday morning, Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi shared a post on the social media platform X and congratulated the Ahmedabad Police, administration and social workers. He wrote on X, "Congratulations to the Ahmedabad Police, District Administration and Social Workers, they did a great job of returning valuables to the families of the victims. Their hard work and dedication has made a big difference in the lives of many people. Salute to these heroes." Earlier, regarding the Ahmedabad plane crash, Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi had said that whatever items have been found from the accident site will be handed over to their families after investigation. 241 people, including former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, died in the Air India plane crash. Only one passenger, who is a British citizen of Indian origin, survived the accident.
