Vadodara (The Uttam Hindu) :  A tragic incident unfolded on Wednesday morning when a portion of the Gambhira Bridge, connecting Vadodara and Anand districts in Gujarat, collapsed into the Mahisagar River. The bridge, which had been in service for over four decades, gave way around 7:30 AM, causing multiple vehicles—including trucks, vans and an autorickshaw—to plunge into the river from a height of nearly 60 feet.

Emergency teams were quickly deployed to the site, including disaster response forces and local rescue units. So far, 15 bodies have been recovered, while four individuals remain unaccounted for. Search operations are ongoing both at the site and downstream. Several of the victims belonged to the same family from a nearby village. Survivors have been hospitalized, with some reported to be in critical condition.

Concerns Over Aging Infrastructure

The collapse has sparked serious concerns about the condition of aging infrastructure in the region. The bridge was built in the 1980s and had reportedly shown signs of structural weakness. Local voices have raised questions about why earlier warnings and inspection reports highlighting safety issues were not acted upon. Over the past few years, several similar incidents involving old and neglected bridges have occurred across the state, pointing to a wider pattern of infrastructural oversight.

Government Reaction and Compensation

Top government officials have expressed their grief over the tragedy. Financial compensation has been announced for the families of the deceased and the injured. An inquiry has been ordered to determine the exact cause of the collapse and whether negligence played a role.

Investigation Underway

Authorities have begun an official investigation to assess the bridge's structural condition and any lapses in its maintenance. Engineers and administrative officials are being questioned regarding inspection reports and whether any red flags were ignored.

Public Outcry Grows

As the rescue and recovery efforts continue, public frustration is mounting. Many residents claim the bridge had visible signs of wear and damage for years, but requests for repairs were repeatedly ignored.

A Stark Reminder

This tragic event serves as a grim reminder of the urgent need for infrastructure audits and timely maintenance across the country. The coming days will reveal more about what led to the collapse—and who should be held accountable.
