New Conversion Law Implemented: Hiding Religion for Marriage Now 'Invalid'; Up to 10 Years Jail, Heavy Fines
Panchkula (The Uttam Hindu): Haryana government has implemented a new conversion law for those who marry by hiding their religion. Increasing strictness on incidents related to conversion, the Haryana government has made it clear that if a person hides his religion for marriage, then such marriage will be considered 'invalid'. Under this Act, if a person marries by hiding his religion, then he can be jailed for three to 10 years and fined a minimum of three lakh rupees and a maximum of five lakh rupees.
According to the new conversion law, if a child is born from such a marriage, it will be considered legally valid and will get full right to inheritance in the property. There is a provision in the new law that no person can convert religion by deceit, greed, force or undue influence, even if it is done for marriage. According to Sumita Mishra, it is mandatory to inform the concerned Deputy Commissioner before converting religion. The person conducting the religious ritual will also have to give information. Objections can be lodged on any announcement for 30 days. If a person marries by hiding his religion, he can be jailed for three to 10 years and fined at least three lakh rupees and maximum five lakh rupees.
Sumita Mishra has issued instructions to the Deputy Commissioners, Police Commissioners and senior police officers of all the districts to ensure strict compliance of the 'Haryana Prevention of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act and Rules 2022'.
