India to strengthen security with PM Narendra Modi Israel visit; Mission Sudarshan to gain new momentum
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Israel on February 25 and 26 for a significant two-day trip. The visit is being viewed as an important step in further strengthening strategic and defence cooperation between the two countries. The main focus of the visit is to enhance India’s security architecture and expand collaboration in advanced defence technologies. Although no major defence deal is expected to be formally announced, officials indicate that defence ties between India and Israel have become an ongoing and expanding partnership. Bilateral defence cooperation is projected to cross 10 billion US dollars in the coming years.
Advanced defence technology sharing expected
Sources suggest that Israel may expand cooperation in advanced systems, including high-tech laser-based defence solutions and long-range precision strike systems. The groundwork for deeper defence collaboration was laid during the visit of Defence Secretary R.K. Singh to Israel last year. Both nations are working toward strengthening joint development and technology partnerships in critical defence sectors.
Mission Sudarshan and missile defence cooperation
A key strategic aspect of the visit is Mission Sudarshan, aimed at strengthening India’s protection against long-range missile threats. India and Israel are accelerating joint efforts in anti-ballistic missile defence systems. Israel is known globally for its layered missile defence capabilities, including systems such as Arrow, David's Sling and Iron Dome. These systems are designed to counter long, medium and short-range threats. India aims to enhance its air defence network through similar advanced technologies.
Expansion of defence systems and capabilities
Following previous operational experiences, India is focusing on expanding its inventory of advanced guided weapons and air defence systems. Discussions may include long-range precision-guided munitions, air-launched missile systems and enhanced naval air defence capabilities. Strengthening maritime and aerial defence preparedness remains a priority in bilateral talks.
Focus on technology, agriculture and water management
Beyond defence, the visit is expected to cover cooperation in emerging technologies such as quantum computing and scientific research collaboration. Agriculture and water management are also key areas of discussion. Israel’s expertise in drip irrigation and desalination technologies may lead to expanded partnerships. The meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to further consolidate strategic, technological and diplomatic ties between the two countries.
