Indian-origin student among those killed in Texas shooting as FBI probes Iran war link
Austin (The Uttam Hindu): Four people, including 21-year-old Indian-origin student Savita Shan, were killed and 14 others injured in a shooting incident early Sunday in the Texas capital. Authorities confirmed Shan’s identity among the victims. According to police, the accused, 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne, allegedly opened fire outside a local beer garden, first shooting from his vehicle at people seated on the patio before stepping out and firing at pedestrians. Officers at the scene shot him dead.
Investigators said the suspect was wearing clothing featuring the Iranian flag and a religious message, prompting federal agencies to examine a possible extremist or terror-related motive. Acting FBI officials stated that the attacker’s background and potential links are under investigation. Following recent US military actions involving Iran, counterterrorism teams across the country have been placed on heightened alert.
The University of Texas community expressed grief over Shan’s death. University President Jim Davis described her as a bright and driven student who aspired to make a meaningful impact. Shan, who grew up in Austin, was pursuing dual degrees in economics and management information systems and was set to graduate this year. She was actively involved in community initiatives and internships, while also running a small e-commerce venture. Police officials said the investigation is ongoing and urged the public to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
